Keeping to a Good and Healthy Diet For Youthful Aging

We are aging, of course, from the day we are born, and what we eat and drink subsequently affects how we look and feel. Those of us brought up on an American or English style diet probably have cumulative effects from our diet that affect our health more obviously as we get older. Being overweight or obese is commonplace now; heart disease, diabetes and cancer are common. People's faces can look prematurely old as a leathery, wrinkled skin takes an early grip on their appearance.

Young people in their early twenties can be excused for being blase about their diet, whether it be all the fattening and sweet food that they eat, or the excessive alcohol they consume when they are binge drinking. But as you get past 30, there is less excuse and more urgency. If you want a long and healthy life, and to age both gracefully and healthily, then taking a more serious approach to diet can still bring rewards. It is never too late to change your diet, though the sooner you get into good habits the better.

There is a danger that, when you retire and find yourself less occupied than before, you allow yourself to lapse into boredom, and a greater tendency to reach for the consolation foods, just to pass the time. That is another reason to think carefully about how you spend your retirement. To age youthfully, we need to address our lives on a broad front that includes positively occupying our time, carrying out healthy pursuits, getting plenty of exercise, eating and drinking well, continuing our education infinitely, developing new skills, and even thinking and planning like a 25 year old.

When it comes to diet, I am not necessarily talking about going on a diet to lose weight; not everyone is overweight. Even if your weight is within a healthy range, you can always improve what and when you eat, and the mix of foods you drink and consume, in a way that you feel healthier than you do now.

The more you learn about health benefits of the available foods, the more likely you are to strike the right balance of feeling satisfied and healthy at the same time. In fact, the subject of food and health is a fascinating one, which is a positive topic for you to take up as a pursuit. If retirement brings you more time to experiment with food, then learning about different foods, and cooking different recipes can be an enjoyable hobby which can help you to look and feel younger.
