Looking After Your Health as You Age

Whatever age you are, then caring for your health is one of your top, if not the top, priorities. However, the older you get, the more you are likely to feel the urgency of taking your health seriously, and the more likely you are to have health problems.

If you have retired then there is a good chance you have more time than before to focus on health matters. If you can use that time wisely and positively, and adopt the right mental attitude to aging, then there is much you can do to look after your own health and help your immune system to prevent serious illness.

Health is a fascinating subject, and learning about medical practices as they may affect you, and alternative therapies, is a very productive way to pass some of your new spare time. It could also prolong your life, make you feel better, and thus enjoy life more.

Looking after your health is not just about going to the doctor when you are ill or are due a check up. The common chronic diseases, cancer, diabetes and heart diseases, are all lifestyle diseases, so maintaining a healthier lifestyle will help your immune system to prevent such illnesses ruin your remaining years.

There are a number of elements to caring for your health which apply at any age, but those who are retired have more time to apply them. It is important to follow a healthy balanced diet, with plenty of fruits, vegetables and water. A half hour of exercise a day, including such things as walking, cycling and swimming, is probably enough, although you should take advice from your doctor if you have a medical problem or not exercised for many years.

Overall, though, keeping generally active and mentally occupied on positive activities will make a big contribution to your health, alongside the diet and exercise. Some people unfortunately see retirement as "the beginning of the end" when it is a wonderful opportunity for renewal. Keep planning ahead with how you are going to fill your long life ahead, and you really can age with youth.
