Incorporating Exercise Into Your Lifestyle as You Age

Anything that is said about exercise could apply as much to anyone of any age, as it does to those who are in their 50's, 60's, 70's or older. The major differences are that:

1. The older you are the less you may be capable of achieving in an exercise program, although those who have kept fit through their lives may still, in their 70's, outperform an unfit 20 year old and

2. The older you are, the more important it is to consult a doctor before taking on more exercise than you have been used to.

Keeping active, both mentally and physically, is one of the most important things you can do to help your overall health as you get older. Exercise and diet can work well together to help you enjoy your later years, and extend your life. Whatever your level of activity in previous decades of your life, there is always plenty of scope to improve on what you have done before, and overcome bad habits.

What Type of Exercise is Good For Older People as They Age?

Aging is not a signal to stop doing anything, unless you have the wrong mental attitude. Just as you can learn many new skills to and gather new knowledge to exercise your brain, you can learn new exercise techniques, and do extra with those types of exercise you have always done. That positive approach will enable you to feel healthier and live longer, whereas a negative attitude will have the opposite effect.

If you have retired and have more control over your own time, then it is easy, given the will, to make more time available for activities such as swimming, cycling or walking. All three forms of exercise are good for your health in a direct way, but also they may give you opportunities to interact with like minded people, make new friends, and see new places. Cycling and walking especially can be mixed with other pursuits, such as nature (birdwatching, wild flowers and photography for example). The pleasure that can bring you will help you to feel more fulfilled than just sitting around at home watching television. That contributes to good health, well being and longevity.

There are many ways to get more exercise, and many sports that older people can still enjoy, while helping them to mix socially, and develop a healthy lifestyle. Golf is a great example, with all the walking it involves, and is something you can start to learn at any age. So, get out there, get motivated, and enjoy an active lifestyle.
